Grand Palace, Bangkok

Located on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River, the Grand Palace is a landmark of Bangkok and even Thailand. Built in 1782, it is still resplendent today after continuous renovation and expansion by the king. It brings together the best of Thai architecture, painting, sculpture and decoration. The site was also the seat of government offices during from the first to eighth dynasties; but now the ninth emperor has moved to the new palace. The Grand Palace is open to visitors and sometimes used for hosting foreign heads of state and for holding national ceremonies.
